about

For both acts on Dendrochronology, this may well be the first time they've looked back, rather than forwards. "There's no big concept behind these pieces,“ Martijn tells me, “I just think they're cool.” Of course, for someone who loves working with concepts, that's a pretty big step to take.

Dendrochronology – the scientific term for dating the age of trees by their rings – feels like a fitting title. After all, nostalgia, spirituality, eternal truths – these have been far more important topics for Martijn than innovation, progress, and technology. Contact with Twine came about through his deep admiration for the American duo's early 00's work for ghostly, BiP_HOp, and komplott – labels which have mostly already faded from sight.

His two contributions suitably feel like hauntological meditations, filled to the brim with cavernous echos, Lucrecia Dalt's dark bass runs, and Avant-garde Black Metal drummer Jasper Barendregt's psychedelic funk-drumming.

Or, easier still, take the three tracks contributed to Dendrochronology by the former duo's sole remaining member Chad Mossholder. What starts out sounding like a lost Vangelis-soundtrack-sample morphs into time-arresting modular ambient, only to culminate in a dystopian, Skinny-Puppy-like industrial beatscape. Mysterious, bleak, and seductive all at once, this is up to par with their underground classics. Which is not that surprising, as partly, the material was created all the way back in the '90s.

“I don't think these pieces are representative for our respective oeuvres,” according to Martijn. But then what is? If you're genuinely trying out new things, experimenting, and growing as an artist, even a collection of older tracks can seem perfectly up to date. And a split EP can feel like a true collaboration.
