The post-modern Ultra movement of the beginning of the 1980 was also in Haarlem centred around squatted places in Haarlem itself and suburbs like Aerdenhout and Bloemendaal. Artists and musicians created their own workingspaces and studio’s, fuelled by the DIY mentality from the Punk movement.
The main outlet for the music production in Haarlem was the Studio12 label, based in a squatted office of the ‘Haarlems Dagblad’ at Klein Heiligland 12. Also exhibitions and concerts were organised there.
The output on the label were mainly MC’s with handmade covers but later also a few records were released.
The complete catalogue has been digitised and restored to be released (in one form or another) beginning 2014 by Blowpipe.
Studio12 bands were Nexda, Smalts, Vitaal, Die Krü Blød, Abandon, K&I, Cargo Cultus, Heatrow Saxxe, The Terminals, CYBE, Two CC. Some of them also appeared on other labels like Plurex and VPRO. Nowadays only Smalts is still active as a band.
Last year the ULTRA movement was memorised with gigs and exhibitions under the banner ULTRA2012 and the book ‘ULTRA’ (published by Lebowski, Amsterdam), by Harold Schellinx documented the period, its creative output and Haarlems contribution to it.
